Clay tennis courts (including traditional Red Clay and green Har-Tru courts) offer an exceptional playing experience that is easy on the joints and encourages strategic, long-rally play. However, keeping them in peak condition requires daily dedication.

1. Daily Grooming & Luting

After play, the court should be groomed with a drag mat or broom to redistribute loose clay and fill in slide marks. Grooming should be done in a spiral pattern from the net outwards to prevent pulling clay to the perimeter.

2. Moisture Balance (Watering)

Clay courts must retain moisture to keep the surface stable and prevent blowing dust. Water the court at least once or twice daily (usually overnight and during midday heat) depending on humidity. A dry clay court will crumble, scuff, and slide excessively.

3. Rolling the Court

Rolling helps pack the clay to keep the court firm and fast. It should be performed in the spring during reconditioning, or periodically during the season after heavy rains or watering, when the court is damp but not sticky.

4. The Critical Step: Line Cleaning

Sweeping the lines is necessary to ensure players can clearly see boundaries. Traditional line brooms use abrasive bristles that grind against the plastic line tapes, causing early wearing and lifting the tapes from the ground.
